Given that the spreading is oblique, the tensile loading (here the spreading vector) of 5 MPa is oblique to the fracture strike, rather than perpendicular to it. The contours indicate the shear stress in mega-pascals. The result shown high-stress (red) zones where transfer faults are likely to develop (cf. Gudmundsson, 2011. Rock Fractures in Geological Processes, cited).
