The reason for the regional dykes changing the local stress field so as to favour subsequent sill emplacement is indicated in this simple numerical model which shows the stress trajectories (the ticks) of the maximum principal compressive stress σ1. In a rift zone σ1 is normally vertical and favours vertical dyke emplacement, but has here become horizontal and favours sill emplacement.
