Fig. 4. An example of a finite element model of a reservoir with 30 thin layers, of widely different mechanical properties, located on top of the layer hosting the reservoir. Theoretically, there is no limit to the number of layers that can be modelled in this way. Thus, for example for a sedimentary basin, each of the layers seen in the seismic images can be modelled as a separate mechanical unit.
